Additional Activity: Beginning Composition

Using a pencil and a piece of blank staff paper, compose staff a four-measure composition of quarter-notes (from the D tetrachord) and rests.  Students are to include the clef of their instrument, a time signature (4/4), double bar, bar lines and only 4 beats per measure.  No more than two measures should be the same.  Have students perform their composition (marching or singing, if they wish).


Additional Activity: Beginning Composition

  • Clef of the student’s instrument
  • Time signature (4/4) and only four notes/rests per measure
  • Double bar and bar lines

Optional Guidelines

  • Start and end composition on the resting tone
  • No more than two measures should be the same
  • Have students perform their composition

  • Additional Activity: Mary Played in D Major

    Instruct students to write out “Mary Had a Little Lamb” in D major on a piece of staff paper.  Have them include the major key signature, time signature, their instrument’s clef and finger numbers over each note. 

     

    Additional Activity: Composing with D Major Notes

    Using a pencil and a piece of blank staff paper, compose a four-measure composition using the notes in the D Major Scale.  Students are to include the clef of their instrument, a key and time signature, double bar, bar lines and no more than two measures should be the same.  Have students perform their composition in all four modes.
